INSIGHTS

The history of CB (Citizens Band) in Italy began in the late 1960s, when this form of radio communication became popular in many countries around the world, especially in the United States. However, during those years, the use of CB in Italy was illegal because it was unregulated. Despite this, more and more people began to buy and use these radios illegally.

Following protests and public demonstrations, which involved even parliamentarians and public figures, the Italian government finally decided to intervene. In 1973, an initial circular was issued that tolerated the use of CB radios under certain conditions, but the real turning point came with Presidential Decree No. 156 of 1973 (Consolidated Text of Telecommunications) and, especially, with the Ministerial Decree of April 13, 1978, which officially legalized the use of CB radios. The legalization of CB radios represented a historic victory for the right to free interpersonal communication.

In the 1980s, CB became a cultural phenomenon, inspiring songs and films (such as 'Convoy – Trincea d’asfalto,' 1978); the CB was a true forerunner of the 'social networks' that would emerge much later in the Internet era.
