Apple releases iTunes It was based on Bill Kincaid's SoundJam MP software. SoundJam MP of the Bill KincaidInitially, iTunes was only supported by the Mac operating system and functioned as a media player and media management tool. iTunes has allowed users to record music from CDs, bring it to iTunes, mix it with other songs and burn it to a custom CD. In 2003 the Apple iTunes music store was launched, transforming music distribution and the entire music industry. Over a million songs have been downloaded a week after its launch. In 2013, over 25 billion songs had been downloaded from the iTunes Store.
